President Lincoln’s Cottage Expands Digital Offerings with Release of First E-book Newly digitized anthology expands access to the latest scholarship on the Emancipation Proclamation.

Washington, D.C. – President Lincoln’s Cottage released its newest publication in e-book format, offering readers a fresh alternative for consuming history. Emancipation at 150 is an anthology featuring different takes on the Emancipation Proclamation from a dozen leading Lincoln historians and government officials, produced in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and in partnership with the United States Commission on Civil Rights. The anthology is sold at select online retailers, including the Amazon Kindle store and the iTunes book store, and is also available in PDF format as a free download from http://www.lincolncottage.org/emancipation-at-150/.

“Publishing Emancipation at 150 in an e-reader compatible format enables us to more effectively share this research with mobile audiences worldwide,” says Erin Carlson Mast, Executive Director of President Lincoln’s Cottage. “Our award-winning online interactive programs, designed as distance learning tools for K-12 students, have received national recognition for excellence. Creating e-book versions of our publications is a natural step forward in expanding access to critical history. As the site where President Lincoln—a president who embraced technology—developed the Emancipation Proclamation, it is fitting that our first digital publication focuses on that seminal document. We look forward to producing more educational and historical e-book publications.”

Nationally renowned Civil War scholars, including Dr. Allen Guelzo, Dr. Chandra Manning, Dr. Edna Medford, and Dr. Matthew Pinsker, contributed essays to the anthology. Emancipation at 150 is part of a year-long commemoration of the Emancipation Proclamation sesquicentennial at President Lincoln’s Cottage. Other programs produced for the sesquicentennial included the display of an original, signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation, an Emancipation-themed tour of the Cottage, a panel discussion featuring Emancipation at 150 authors, and a New Year’s Eve party honoring the Watch Night tradition.

President Lincoln’s Cottage, “the Cradle of the Emancipation Proclamation,” is located on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, DC. While living here for more than a quarter of his presidency, Abraham Lincoln bonded with soldiers and veterans, made crucial decisions about the Civil War, and, most notably, developed the Emancipation Proclamation his first summer in residence. His daily commute put him in regular contact with wounded soldiers and self-emancipated men, women, and children. Today, the site offers an intimate, never-before-seen view of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency and private life, and new perspectives on the influential ideas Lincoln developed while living here.

Celebrate Family Day at President Lincoln's Cottage

Join President Lincoln's Cottage and the Armed Forces Retirement Home on Saturday, September 21st, 2013 from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm as we enjoy the Lincoln family's seasonal retreat.

FREE activities include: a petting zoo, a Civil War encampment featuring the Bucktail soldiers, tours of Sherman Tower, live music, dramatic re-enactments, a book signing, and crafts and games, including DIY top hats and making cards for veterans! Family members of all ages will enjoy the live entertainment and activities inspired by the Lincoln family and their life at the Soldiers' Home.

Guests are invited to mingle with authors at a 6:00 pm cocktail reception in the Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center atrium. Lectures are held at 6:30 pm in the Emancipation Room of President Lincoln's Cottage, and are followed by a book signing in the library.

Join us for a recitation of Lincoln's most enduring words - the Gettysburg Address

You are invited to participate in a day of reflection at President Lincoln's Cottage, a place that framed Lincoln's development of one of the most famous speeches in American history, the Gettysburg Address.

On November 19th, 2013, groups and individuals will join together on the Cottage veranda to recite the Gettysburg Address each hour starting at 10:45am and ending at 2:45pm. Memorization is not required - cards with the speech printed on it will be provided.

Joan Benoit Samuelson at the
First Annual Freedom 5K XC at President Lincoln's Cottage

Join Olympic champion Joan Benoit Samuelson at the first annual Freedom 5K XC at President Lincoln's Cottage! The Freedom 5K XC, a unique cross country event open to the general public, provides runners and walkers alike the rare opportunity to race on the 250-acre Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH) campus in NW Washington, DC. Run with Ms. Benoit Samuelson, Olympic marathon gold medalist and running icon, and enjoy a photo opportunity with her after the race. All proceeds and donations support preservation, award-winning programs, and innovative initiatives such as the Students Opposing Slavery program at President Lincoln's Cottage, the only privately funded National Monument in the nation.

The Freedom 5K XC traverses the picturesque AFRH grounds, on roads and paths that wind past ponds, woods, and fields. As a cross country-style course, the running surface will include paved and unpaved pathways. The run culminates at President Lincoln's Cottage, "the Cradle of the Emancipation Proclamation," where Lincoln developed his seminal document in our country's ongoing struggle for freedom.

Cottage Conversation with Sidney Blumenthal

Join us on Thursday, May 19, as ABC News' Jonathan Karl interviews Sidney Blumenthal on the newly released book, A Self-Made Man: the Political Life of Abraham Lincoln, 1809-1849, the first of Blumenthal's multi-volume biography of Lincoln. This first volume traces Lincoln from his painful youth in Kentucky and Indiana to his emergence in Illinois and national politics as the man we recognize as Abraham Lincoln.

Mr. Blumenthal is the former assistant and senior adviser to President Bill Clinton, and senior adviser to Hillary Clinton. He has been a national staff reporter for The Washington Post, Washington editor and staff writer for The New Yorker, senior writer for The New Republic, and contributed to numerous additional publications.

Mr. Karl has served as ABC's Chief White House Correspondent since December 2012. Prior to ABC, Mr. Karl has worked for CNN, The New York Post, The New Republic, The Wall Street Journal, The Weekly Standard, The New Republic, Reason, The Christian Science Monitor and The San Francisco Chronicle.
