RE: Henry Clay? Or Abraham Lincoln?
I believe Clay and Mary's father knew each other well.

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

Do we know how close they were geographically?

I believe that I read in The Mary Lincoln Enigma that they were close enough geographically for Mary to make the trek on her own at a fairly early age.

That's what I thought-that they were neighbors-whatever that meant back then.

Didn't see make frequent visits to his residence when she was very young?

I just read the following in "Father Abraham-Lincoln and his sons" by Harold Holzer: "Mary...would listen avidly to the great Henry Clay whenever he visited her father's home....He (Lincoln) must have been impressed by Mary's stories of meeting his hero, Senator Clay." (p.20).
Gene recommended this book in another thread. I would like to add that IMO it is worth buying because of a great many of beautiful pictures and a layout designed with loving attention to detail. I received the book today and one picture, a cartoon on Lincoln's secret escape from Baltimore, instantly made me go crazy. It had been depictured in our history books at school in grade 8 or 9. I could never forget this one, I don't know why. It is like a time shift back to school days. At the time I became interested, not in Lincoln in particular then, but in North American history. Unfortunatelly, the picture credit doesn't mention in which newspaper the cartoon was published. It is on p.106, bottom left corner (I've unsuccessfully tried to upload it), shows Lincoln running with flittering clothes and a "Scotch plaid Cap", upper body bent forward, arms stretched out ahead. If anyone had an idea, please, I'd so much love to know it!

RE: Henry Clay? Or Abraham Lincoln?
Exactly! Wasn't it published in a newspaper then?
