RE: Trivial Trivia - taking trivia to new levels
Before Lincoln was assassinated, "he" (not Lincoln) threw away, what would have been worth in today's money, more than $6.8 million (U.S. dollars) .
Who was "he" ? “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |

The word "he" is in parentheses. Can you share why this is?

RE: Trivial Trivia - taking trivia to new levels
Hmmm. Maybe later. But, yes, its a crucial point.
A clue would be that "he" was the one that said "he" had thrown it away. “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |

Booth, when he said that he had thrown away more than $20,000 per year gained from acting?

RE: Trivial Trivia - taking trivia to new levels
No, sorry Susan, not Booth. But you're close.
"He" said he'd thrown it away. ... others present may have said he burnt any chance of getting it. “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |

RE: Trivial Trivia - taking trivia to new levels
Roger, if Susan was close ... you are even closer.
I did though say that the words 'thrown away' were spoken before Lincoln was assassinated. ( I did not say how long before ... and having double-checked I think that it could be debated as to whether I'm correct ... but then we'll never know) “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |

RE: Trivial Trivia - taking trivia to new levels
Ok, ok. Those words about throwing away all that hard cash ... were almost definitely not spoken ... but they should have been.
(Sorry about the confusion but you'll understand when you get the answer. And anyway I'm part Irish which excuses confusion but has nothing to do with the answer) Something happened to stop those words from being spoken (which wouldnt have been heard anyway) “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |

RE: Trivial Trivia - taking trivia to new levels
This character was apparently guilty of impertinence.

Michael, do you know if the right answer has ever before been mentioned on this forum? (even if in a different context)

RE: Trivial Trivia - taking trivia to new levels
The name has been mentioned on the forum. But not in the context of throwing away hard cash.
Of course love had something to do with it. Manners and good society. Roger, one of your suggestions was Judah Benjamin. .... I missed it, but it was wrong anyway. Your other attempt was much closer .... closer than Susan's . “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |

RE: Trivial Trivia - taking trivia to new levels
You got it ! Bang on target. Well done.
I used "he" because its a fictional character. “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |
