The library also holds Pendel's affidavit (executed in 1878): "I certify that on or about the 22nd of April 1865, Tad Lincoln, son of the President, presented me with the frock coat worn by the President when he was assassinated in Ford's Theatre on the evening of the 19th of April 1865. I further testify that the larger of the two pieces of cloth was cut by me from the right breast of the coat presented to President R B Hayes this 14th day of January 1878." Pendel's affidavit is off by two dates. On the 22nd of April, he was on Lincoln's funeral train bound for Springfield. The evening of the 19th should be -- as everyone knows--- the 14th. |
