Mrs. Murphy lived in Terre Haute, Indianna. and had a madstone that was believed could cure dog bite infections. When son Robert was bitten by a dog, Lincoln took him to see her.

I concur with Anita, that the person is Eugene Debs. However, I have to correct an error in Mick's clues. Contrary to what some internet sites
say, like the Encyclopedia Britannica and the Library of Congress (!), Eugene Debs was never stripped of his US Citizenship because of his Sedition conviction due to his anti-war speech.

Maybe it was his 'rights' as a citizen that were stripped from him. I must admit that I thought it an odd action to strip citizenship from a person .... I always thought it would be something that no nation could quite literally "do". I think it would be impossible now if that nation was a signatory to United Nations treaty on Human Rights.

Anyway, I was prevented from giving another clue concerning my person having met someone in New York who later went on to have an unpleasant experience with an ice pick. Now , who do you think that was?

About Deb's citizenship - Congress passes a lot of stupid legislation. But he definitely was still a US citizen. Non-citizens are prohibited from running for President by Article II of the US Constitution, and Debs couldn't have run in 1920 if he was no longer a US citizen. The confusion comes from the state of Indiana barring Debs from voting after his release because his sentenced was commuted by Pres. Harding; he wasn't pardoned and a convicted felon cannot vote.

Fifty years earlier, in 1926, Congress was also inundated with requests to "restore" his citizenship, but he was still a US citizen:

And yes, you are correct it was Trotsky that met Debs. Trotsky spent a few months in New York in 1917.
