RE: Hurricane Sandy
Linda -

I'll call you tomorrow night and see how you and the rest are doing! I can keep my iPhone charged up out in my car! HA! We'll probably lose power as well....

Thanks, Betty! It's still pretty quiet here but the winds will pick up during the day.

RE: Hurricane Sandy
My brother just got deployed and his wife and sons are in the path! I've been in several tornadoes, and LOVE a good thunderstorm, but not when people's lives are in danger. It's slightly surreal to even imagine when we have bright blue skies, and expect highs this week back in the high 60s, low 70s (after snow last week that even closed some schools!)

My prayers are for everyone's safety.

RE: Hurricane Sandy
I'm praying that everyone made it through Sandy OK....

Fortunately it only brushed through Hanover, VA although it was a close call! I hope that all of our friends in NJ, NY, DC, CT, PA and elsewhere made it safely through!

Please stay in touch if you can!! Heard from Joe Becket about midnight and he was charging his cell in his truck. He said that he had never seen winds like that in his life. Linda lost power about 6 pm....

I'm keeping you all in my prayers!

Just heard from Laurie - she and Surratt House are fine!

RE: Hurricane Sandy
We had some snowflakes here in Southern Maryland this morning, and it is still drizzling. However, the wind is sooooo quiet that it is kinda freaky!

All I know about Surratt House is that it maintained power throughout. We have electric phones at work, so I dialed the number every 2-3 hours to check. The blessed voice mail came on each time.

All federal, state, and local governments are closed in our area, so I don't have to report to work. We have essential employees (park rangers, park police, and maintenance crews) who will alert me to any damage at Surratt House. So far, no news is good news.

RE: Hurricane Sandy
Heard from Linda and Ed Issacs --- Both are fine, but Linda has no electricity nor internet connection.... Ed has electricity. Heard from Kate Larsen as well. She's fine -- as is John Howard.

So glad that so many of our friends are OK -- still have NOT heard from Richard Sloan! Has anyone heard from him? Last report I heard he was in Manhattan - and that has become like a war zone from what I've heard.... hopefully we'll know something soon....

RE: Hurricane Sandy
This storm has been devastating here in N.J. Very few gas stations are open, food stores with no electricity and it's looking like power will be out for a minimum of a week. It's also getting colder, with temps in the 30's tonight, so folks without a fireplace or woodstove will be even more miserable.

I'm pretty well set, as I went shopping just before it hit and the woodstove makes the house more than comfortable. I'd like to thank everyone for their concern. Please pray for those who are in the hardest hit areas.

So good to hear from you Joe! Yes, I've been praying for ya'll in NJ and those poor folk in NY (including those who lost EVERYTHING in those horrid fires in Queens!) are in my thoughts and prayers....this has been a ghastly time for all. Heard this morning that the VA Red Cross and VA Power are headed to ya'll's relief in NJ and NY -- hope they and others get there soon to give aid!

My Jamie is a crew leader for for Asplundh, the tree people for the electric company. This morning he posted some photos on Facebook of the staging area at Atlantic City Race Track, pointing out all the Alabama Power trucks (his Sara is from Alabama). I heard Texas was on the way before it even started. Everyone is so good!

RE: Hurricane Sandy
Dawn, I hope that your son stays safe with the hard work he and his crews will be facing in the weeks ahead. Asplundh does much of the tree removal in Maryland during these times, and they seem to be great people.

I think Momma Surratt was watching out for her little portion of Southern Maryland. Those of us who live close to the museum seem to have had the least amount of damage. No power outages in our immediate area, no street closings, no severe tree damage. We can't say the same for neighbors about thirty miles in all directions of us, however. Yet, even that damage is nothing to what NJ, NY, and CT seem to have experienced.

Wow, Asplundh must be huge. Their orange trucks were everywhere after Hurricane Charley struck our area in 2004.
