Lincoln's Mentors

Saw a new book the other day that I decided to get. It's called Lincoln's Mentors. It is a history of the development of Lincoln's intellect and how he used the experiences of those he admired and knew to overcome adversity. Like most of my Lincoln books this will likely sit on the shelf for a while before I start to read it, but so far it looks interesting.

This book was discussed with Michael Gerhart (the author) a couple weeks ago on the Lincoln Log Podcast

Andrew Jackson is an odd pick... And makes the book that much more enticing to read.

It is said again and again that Lincoln's term in Congress was a failure, but...
Lincoln was on lots of committees, Taylor got elected, Lincoln delivered his 'Spot Resolutions' speech, etc. (Well, perhaps that speech is the reason Whigs lost the Cong. seat, but... 'A failed term in office' seems quite harsh.)

I finally got to reading Ida Tarbell's In the Footsteps of Lincoln, as Gene had reviewed the republication of the book, and I'm very pleased to read that Tarbell was of a similar opinion - "What's this talk of a failed term in Congress?"
