David Herbert Donald's Library
I recently got a message on an old blog I used to operate from a gentleman who had recently attended an estate sale for the late David Herbert Donald, who died in May of 2009. At first I wondered why it took so long for such a sale, but then I remembered that Donald's wife Aida survived him and likely was getting ready to move. Anyway, this gentleman had read a blog post I had done on James G. Randall. Turns out he had purchased an oil painting of Lincoln that Randall had done as a young boy. He was hoping I could give him some more information on the painting since I had mentioned it in the post. I was able to direct him to some information on the painting. These photos are from Donald's library, which boasted over 10,000 books. Unfortunately, the gentleman, who had never heard of Randall or Donald up to the sale, didn't look to see what books autographed by Randall that Donald owned. Here are pictures of Donald's library from the sale website.

Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom.

Looks like he lived in a library not a house. The envy of us all!

Indeed!

I have endured a great deal of ridicule without much malice; and have received a great deal of kindness, not quite free from ridicule. I am used to it. (Letter to James H. Hackett, November 2, 1863)
