Over twenty years ago, Surratt House Museum staged an exhibit on political memorabilia of the 19th century. Three huge showcases were filled with items from one man's private collection -- everything from items like those shown here to ballot boxes, parade lanterns, unusual memorabilia, and more. He left even more at home! The only thing we couldn't fit in was an original, 19th-century voting house that was still standing on the property of a friend of one of our docents. And, don't think that we didn't contemplate moving it... The owner of this great collection had a series of health problems and had no wife nor child to inherit - only a grouchy old sister. He passed away a few years ago, and I have often wondered what happened to his magnificent collection. He was a very smart man, so I'm sure he tried to find a good and proper place for them, but I still worry. |
