Fiery, plain-spoken-yet eloquent. That’s Mr. Chandler! I don’t suppose in his wildest dreams he would have thought just a few years from then that Mr. Lincoln would be in the Executive Mansion. During the war years they butted heads even though on the same side. After Lincoln’s murder he said some very unkind words about AL. I will be visiting Chandler’s grave soon as I do so once a year. I have to make sure he is behaving himself-lol.

From Lincoln’s Peoria speech, October 16, 1854:

“Near eighty years ago we began by declaring that all men are created equal; but now from that beginning we have run down to the other declaration, that for SOME men to enslave OTHERS is a "sacred right of self-government." These principles can not stand together. They are as opposite as God and mammon; and whoever holds to the one, must despise the other.”
