Are we headed to a modern day "Dred Scott" Supreme Court decision?
NYTimes story headline on Thursday, May 9, 2019:
Facing a Trump Stonewall, Democrats Struggle for Options to Compel Cooperation Comment to story: Charlie B USA 6h ago This is why it was so important for Trump and McConnell to install their own loyalists on the Supreme Court. That former bulwark of democracy is now positioned to be the final step in granting autocratic power to Trump. Taney, led to the Civil War. "So very difficult a matter is it to trace and find out the truth of anything by history." -- Plutarch |

I agree with Steve, and (with tongue in cheek) do I detect a 150+-year-old personal bias against Southerners?

I served in Okinawa in Finance at the end of the Vietnam War. A few years back, one of the guys in Payroll started a vigorous group email correspondence among guys who served at Camp Kue. This morning he posted an email. A portion therefrom follows: Speaking of making new friends. Had a flat tire late yesterday afternoon coming back late from the mountains. I had had one before and managed to deal with it just fine by my li'l old self in the light of a closed Gro. , but yesterday learned the good country people of Habersham County do not see some one on the side of a busy four lane and not stop to help. The first young man backed his pick- up up, put on his flashers and said we got to get this thing changed before that Storm ! ( you guys out West were sending us yet another ). He wanted to take over while I got out the spare. The car slipped and jack fell under the spare when it was not quite in place, and there was a bit of drama and another pick-up stopped with a young boy and girl, who ran back toward us. But their jack was rusted and busted so they went to get one from 'Diddy'. And then another guy in muscle beater t-shirt stopped. He had tattoos down to his wrist and crawling up his neck, but amazingly kind blue eyes, and he did have a good jack behind the seat of his truck. ( none of these folks were people of means ). One guy for some reason asked if I was a judge ( I figured he may have been in front of one or two ). One looked like maybe he was a guard at Alto ( just over the hill and where some of 'My Cousin Vinnie' was filmed). No one would take anything for their trouble and for getting home late for supper. Not even enough for a 6 pack. One said he was already plenty blessed, one said it was karma and thought I must have lots and he knew it would come back around to him. Was a young truck driver and when I said I hear you can make good money driving... he said it is the only job you can go to school for only 4 weeks for, come out without any debt, and make six figures the first year. Anyway, thought I would share that in Habersham County GA they raise their chillun right. And it sure restored my faith in our fellow men (and women ). It's hard not to like people like that, no matter where they come from. "So very difficult a matter is it to trace and find out the truth of anything by history." -- Plutarch |

Thanks for sharing that specific story of Southern kindness. There are generous people all over the globe and from all walks of life. It's just hard to find them sometimes nowadays. And, personally, I have found that rednecks are great to have on your side. |
