Droopy
Some of you here already now this, but some don't. You might have noticed that my avatar is a picture of Droopy, a basset my wife and I rescued about seven years ago. She was five or six when we got her and the person who delivered her to us had her in the Santa hat. This year, after several months of trying to nurse her through, we had to put her down. In 55 years, this was the hardest decision I ever had to make. Even though she had her issues, she was still a good dog. I just want to take this opportunity to urge anyone looking for a pet to consider adopting an adult dog. They need love too.

RE: Droopy
Rob - I am so sorry about that loss, I feel for you and your wife!!! How old was she finally? I can't agree more, adult pets need love, too! And they return it over and over.

RE: Droopy
Eva,
I'm guessing about 13. There was some confusion as to her exact age when we got her, but our best guess is she was six then. Thanks for your kind words. Best Rob Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom. --Ida M. Tarbell

RE: Droopy
She had a bad habit of going through trash cans, so we had to move the one in our bathroom to the tub. One day I heard a noise in the bathroom. Going in I noticed she had jumped into the tub. Needless to say we moved the trash into a cabinet.

Even though you and I have never met, I have loved the photo of Droopy (aka Santa Claws) for so many years that I feel like I have looked into those soulful eyes many times. When I lost my last dog about ten years ago, Steve Miller sent me Rainbow Bridge. Find it and find some comfort in its words. |

RE: Droopy
Thanks, Laurie. I have read the Rainbow Bridge story many times. You are right. It is comforting.
This is where we got Droopy from. https://bassetrescue.org/ We were fortunate in that Droopy had not been physically abused by her previous owner. A couple got her for their son. The mother had cancer, and they wanted to give the son something to keep his mind off of his mother's illness. Eventually the mother died and the son went to college. The father was forced to work two jobs just to keep up the mortgage payments, so Droopy was often left alone, which gave her separation anxiety. He finally realized it was not doing her any good, so he surrendered her to the group. She never liked it when we left the house and shadowed us when we were home. I also must thank Anita of this forum. Droopy was diagnosed with degenerative myelopothy which causes loss of maneuverability in the hind quarters. Anita kindly purchased a sling that allowed us to take Droopy out for walks and things almost up to the day we had to put her down. I sent this photo to Ed Steers. She was laying behind my chair in the office. This is the picture I took when I found her in the tub. I'm sorry to hear about Droopy. We had to do the same with one of our cats, Onslow, a couple of weeks ago.

RE: Droopy
I'm sorry, Rob. Bassetts are a special breed. I rescued Homer in the early 90's and had him for almost 17 years. (That's me making him howl - a special Basset trait that makes them that much more fun.) I'm sure you gave yours a great life. RE: Droopy
Thanks Joe. Homer looks like a fine dog. The first time I ever heard Droopy howl she was standing on the edge of our couch looking out the front door at some kids getting off the school bus. It was quite a noise.
