Newton Strong and Matilda Edwards
This 1952 article in Pennsylvania History tells the story of Newton Strong and his bride Matilda Edwards, claimed by some to have been a rival with Mary Todd for Lincoln's affections.

RE: Newton Strong and Matilda Edwards
That is a wonderful article, Susan. Thanks for posting. When I think of Matilda Edwards I tend to think of what numerous authors have written...that a high percentage of Springfield's young men were seeking her hand in marriage. I once read she turned down 18 marriage proposals.
The article mentions that William E. Barton described her as "tall, willowy and a blond." That is the first time I think I have ever read such a description of her. Does anyone know Barton's source for this? |
