Need a little help for an upcoming trip, please!
I had made arrangements to see “Lincoln the Communicator” in Pittsfield, IL , meet up with some friends to talk and also added on a short trip for a young lady that otherwise would not be able to see the ALPLM.
The concert/event was cancelled yesterday and all the people who planned to attend from the area aren’t coming anymore. I’ll still be in Pittsfield to meet them on Sunday and take them to Springfield but am now lacking a proper itinerary for Saturday. I have already been to Beardstown. Was told Quincy is worth a visit (how much time do I need there?) And also – is there something else in the area you’d recommend to see? Flying in to Chicago on Friday, arriving in the afternoon. I can’t reschedule the hotel in Pittsfield (Saturday to Sunday) for it would make me look like an unsteady ogre from abroad with no clear destiny. Basic dates are: Arrive in Chicago on Friday afternoon, free time till Sunday morning in Pittsfield; Sunday spent in Springfield, back to Chicago on Monday for flight back. ANY suggestions would be very much appreciated! Thank you all in advance! In case of emergency, Lincoln and children first. |

A first-time visitor should definitely see the ALPLM and, if possible, the Lincoln Home National Historic Site. In there is time, New Salem (about a half-hour north of Springfield), is worth a visit, especially if there a good number of period-costumed docents on hand to enhance the visit. This however, cannot be guaranteed since the State if Illinois is in budget limbo. I am not sure what travel arrangements you have so, without a doubt, the Lincoln Home and ALPLM in Springfield would be my top choices. Hope this helps. Too bad your itinerary got scrambled and too bad you were not going to be in that area for the spring tour the first weekend in May. Quincy has a debate-site plaque and is a fine old river town, but I would still opt for Springfield. Hope this helps. And, just to rub it in for Gene, stay away from the Cozy Dog unless you are traveling with a gastroenterologist--HaHa! |

The town of Lincoln, IL is worth a visit if you have time.
About 30 minutes north of Springfield off I-55, it has a nice Lincoln Heritage Museum, several nice murals painted on buildings in the down town area. Springfield Tour post #217-233 http://rogerjnorton.com/LincolnDiscussio...ge-15.html (Museum is open on Sat 1-4) https://museum.lincolncollege.edu/visit/ The State Bank of Lincoln also has some interesting paintings and artifacts. May be closed on Saturday. We ate at the Blue Dog In, which was enjoyable. I thought it was a fun little town to visit. Then there is New Salem - http://www.lincolnsnewsalem.com This Springfield Tour Book may help - http://www.visitspringfieldillinois.com/Default.aspx On the Missouri side of the Mississippi river is Hannibal, Mo (south of Quincy) the childhood home of Mark Twain. It's ben a lonnnggg time since I've been there. https://www.visithannibal.com Good luck hope this helps. Regarding the Cozy Dog, I think an unsteady ogre from abroad would enjoy the cultural & culinary delights. You won't need a gastro what ever, but some Tums or Pepto Bismol could possibly come in handy So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

I'm reading your request more about things to see in Pittsfield, Illinois. Don't know if you have TripAdvisor, but here are some suggestions from it: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-...inois.html This looks interesting: http://www.pikecoilhistory.org/Shastid.html It also looks like a home that was recently posted on this forum, but I don't remember it being called the Shastic House. This site in Pittsfield also looks interesting: http://www.pikecoilhistory.org/museum.html |

Thank you all for the great advice!!!
And yes, the Pittsfield area is more what I am looking for...so the history museum is a good start as well as as the Mark Twain home! I had actually thought about the museum in Lincoln since I had not seen this yes, however, it is only open in the afternoon. Will try and report back! In case of emergency, Lincoln and children first. |
