Lincoln's lost gold?
There's a news story that FBI agents, Pennsylvania state officials, and local treasure hunters are searching for buried civil war gold in northern Pennsylvania:
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/03/17/rum...s-say.html and http://www.philly.com/philly/news/civil-...80316.html Just looking at a map of the location where they are digging, I find it incredibly hard to believe that Union troops would bury gold there, so far away. At least not for legitimate purposes (ie, not stolen). |

RE: Lincoln's lost gold?
Very interesting, but I bet they find more stuff under that porta-john in one of the photos than they do under that tent. BTW, without a full map of the West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania area in my hands, doesn't it seem strange that any army unit headed for Philadelphia would go that far northwest to reach their destination?
If you want the story from the folks who have launched this last search go here: http://finderskeepersusa.com/site.php?site=13 If you want to know even more about supposed lost treasure in Pennsylvania, just Google Lost Union Gold in Northwestern Pennsylvania, and you'll get this story plus quite a few others. My favorite site of these was Lost Gold Ingots on http://www.coudy.com. I also found each story had some variations: from one wagon with a false bottom concealing 26 bars of gold under piles of hay to several wagons of similar construction carrying 52 bars of gold. The transport party also seemed to range from 42 soldiers to one soldier with 8 guards and a guide. One source says the group left Wheeling, WV in the early spring, another said early June, and another said near the time of Gettysburg. Finally, at least one source said their destination was D.C., not Philadelphia. In all cases, the reason for the long-way-around (be it D.C. or Philly) was to avoid the Rebels. Even the Rebels get into another lost treasure story in Pennsylvania, however. There is one legend that a Confederate captain's unit stole 15 tons of silver bars and hid them in a cave near Uniontown. Grab your shovels, folks... |

RE: Lincoln's lost gold?
Maybe the treasure hunters should turn their attention to Fairfax County Courthouse in Virginia, where legend has it that men under the command of Mosby hid burlap sacks of family heirlooms and treasures that Union forces under Gen. Edwin Stoughton had stolen on their raids against Virginia planters on the outskirts of D.C.
You can google the story of Mosby capturing Stoughton while he slept and taking the General, about thirty of his men, and a whole lot of horses into custody. They found the loot that the Union had stolen, but supposedly hid it between two trees somewhere in the neighborhood with the hopes of coming back for it. Legend has it that Mosby sent men back for it, but they were captured by Union forces and hanged -- and the treasure is still out there. See: https://www.legendsofamerica.com/mosby-treasure/ As much as that area has developed just within the past few decades, there is probably a McMansion sitting on top of the treasure. There is also a cute quote attributed to Lincoln as a result of the capture of Stoughton. The General was released from prison, but stripped of his rank. When Lincoln heard appeals for his reinstatement, the President supposedly refused, saying to the effect, "I can make brigadier generals, but I cannot make horses." Actually, in Southern Maryland and Mosby's part of the Confederacy, Union forces were quite good at stealing horses... |

RE: Lincoln's lost gold?
Of course, they could go to the trouble of paying to sue the FBI for the records - only for there turn out to be no gold found out like the FBI said at the time and ending up with even less money than they had before - Fool's Gold.
If the FBI really did lie about not finding gold - that would be outrageous. But if the Union buried gold in Pennsylvania during the Civil War instead of evacuating it to someplace safe relatively nearby - that would've been stupid. |
