Joe, kudos, you are right! The item is Carpenter's "First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation of President Lincoln". As for what she did with it - she donated it to Congress.
Carpenter, with the help of William O. Stoddard, campaigned for Congress to purchase the painting, but Congress did not appropriate the money. So it remained in Carpenter’s possession until 1877, when Elizabeth Thompson purchased it.
