Great, Rob and Roger, you are right. It was Grant who denied the invitation in March 1864 (according to Isaac Arnold, 'The life of Abraham Lincoln', p. 371).

I knew Paul Simon professionally for several years. I always regretted not being able to talk with him about his book on Lincoln in the Illinois legislature.
