RE: Extra Credit Questions
Abolition? Vegetarian? I am going to guess either Bronson or Louisa May Alcott.

RE: Extra Credit Questions
Scratch Dr. Busey - I just realized that this person boarded at Sprigg's before Lincoln. Sylvester Graham of graham bread, vegetarian, temperance fame?

Theodore D. Weld?

(Poor man! No coffee...I don't drink alcohol or smoke and I'm used to a certain degree of self-discipline due to 20 years of ballett schooling, but NO COFFEE - unimaginable!)

RE: Extra Credit Questions
Kudos, Eva! That is correct. Theodore Weld, the abolitionist leader, had stayed at Mrs. Sprigg's in the early 1840's, and the quotes come from letters he wrote to his wife.

I may stand corrected on this, but I believe most of the boarders at Mrs. Sprigg's left their families back home. I think Lincoln was unusual in that Mary, Robert, and little Eddie were also boarding there with Abraham. I think the vast majority of Mrs. Sprigg's boarders did not have their families with them.

RE: Extra Credit Questions
Bill, I do not know if this is complete, but here are some:

Knox College conferred on Abraham Lincoln an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws on July 3, 1860. Columbia University followed with a similar degree on June 26, 1861. The College of New Jersey, now Princeton University, did likewise on December 20, 1864.

RE: Extra Credit Questions
Roger, you nailed them! Pretty good for a fellow who had less than a year formal education. What was Lincoln's comment about getting "through" college?

RE: Extra Credit Questions
Probably something like "Don't let school interfere with your education"

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

James Waddell, commander (don't know if he was a general!) of CSS Shenandoah?

RE: Extra Credit Questions
Good morning Eva. I guess I should have been more specific to say "Army General"- which would exclude your great guess- because he was a naval officer.

Stand Watie (also in the western theatre)?

Or was it Joseph Shelby? I must admit, this is a great trivia question since it minvolves two theatres, but I am guessing it will be someone in the trans-Mississippi.
