BTW - Buchanan was also the first president-elect to survive an assassination attempt (poison at the National Hotel).

Here's a question that I don't know the answer to:
The arched entryways of Ford's theater are whitewashed white. What was the original color of the brick on the night of the assassination?

This was taken a few days after, so I'm going to assume it was always white. I know the roof joists were exposed and unfinished at the time, (As can be seen in the photo), but I wonder, with all the mud, why they would paint the archways white?

That's what I thought but I googled 'postcard Fords theater' and found that at some point the arches were the same color as the brick. I guess the cards were touched up because the same picture shows the building in a yellow-brown brick and a red brick.

Got to assume that your picture with the black bunting was taken during the mourning period for Lincoln. Guess that resolves it.
