But, obviously, I was mistaken about my description of the photograph being that of President Abraham Lincoln (no beard). I saw the photograph in the background in another scene from the movie. I was not watching the entire movie closely. Every Sunday for the last several weeks at 8 AM Pacific Time, I have been watching Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) in one of the old Sherlock Holmes movies. Many of these movies I have seen before. I was not watching this one as closely as I usually do and I missed the scene with the photograph that you provided. It looks like Holmes was removing his masquerade as that of an old minister. At the beginning of the movie was a classic Sherlock Holmes movie effect. The pretty young lady had just stolen the pearl (observed in character by Holmes) valued at 50 thousand pounds and she was asking the old minister (played by Holmes) to carry the camera where she had hidden the pearl through customs. She told the old minister that she was worried that the customs people might open the camera and expose the film. She said that the customs people would most likely pass him through without question. Holmes "reluctantly" agreed to do as she asked. They were on board a boat about to enter Dover harbor. Taking possession of the camera and pearl, the old minister "fumbled" the camera. Of course, the pretty young lady almost died from the scare as Holmes noted that the camera had almost fallen into the ocean. After passing through customs, the young lady retrieved the camera from the old minister and thanked him. But when the bad guy (Giles) opened the back of the camera in the cab with his female accomplice, the pearl was missing and only a note from Sherlock Holmes was left in its place. "So very difficult a matter is it to trace and find out the truth of anything by history." -- Plutarch |

RE: Sherlock Holmes and a photograph of Abraham Lincoln
David, I just want to thank you for starting the thread. Since then I have been looking for other movies with photos on Lincoln on a wall. As I find them, I shall post.

Love these lines from the article Roger posted above: "The camera records people and events, but it can’t tell us who is lying, or who is being truthful. It can’t expose the contradictions for us. Instead, the camera goes to the loudest blowhard, not the smartest or most judicious individual. Our very media, our method of discourse, appears to encourage and reward extreme behavior." And, when I posted earlier about thinking of the Manchurian Candidate often over the past decade, my worries have not been about a Russian influence behind our politics, but about a more serious threat from outside sources that have plagued mankind for thousands of years. |

RE: Sherlock Holmes and a photograph of Abraham Lincoln
This is from a TV show, not a movie. Lincoln's picture is on the wall at the far left. What is the name of the TV show?

Yes, Steve. That's correct. This scene was from Sunday night's episode of Madam Secretary.

RE: Sherlock Holmes and a photograph of Abraham Lincoln
The Bailey's have a portrait of Lincoln on the wall in their living room in It's a Wonderful Life, along with (if I remember correctly) a portrait of George Bailey's father. In his office at the Savings and Loan, George has another portrait of his father and one of Herbert Hoover, which I take to be an indicator that the scene was set during Hoover's presidency. I believe these portraits in George's haunts are to be contrasted with those in Henry Potter's: Mr. Potter has a portrait of himself in his offices at home and at the bank.
I have endured a great deal of ridicule without much malice; and have received a great deal of kindness, not quite free from ridicule. I am used to it. (Letter to James H. Hackett, November 2, 1863) |

Somehow the book escaped my attention. Obviously a picture book.

Hint #1: The set is from a TV show, not a movie. The man in the center of the image had a wife who tragically was killed in the final episode before Christmas.

Laurie and Gene, you are both on the right track, but it isn't either of those two shows.
