Hint #1: One of the newest members of this forum has a current publication where the answer can be found. When he joined, I decided to look in the latest issue for a trivia question. The answer can also be found elsewhere, but this was the source I used for the question.

I'm not sure who your source is, but the waiters that I came up with were John Miles (present on the night of the March 15 meeting at Gautier's) and Michael Hayden, who was an acquaintance of Booth. The night watchman was Thomas Manning, a neighbor of David Herold and sometime drinking buddy.

I hadn't either until I went searching through chapter notes in American Brutus. Now, let's hope that Roger's source agrees with it.

Laurie, you win, although one of the names does not match my source. In the latest edition of the excellent Journal of the Lincoln Assassination Fred Hatch mentions two waiters (John Howard and John Miles) and the watchman (Thomas Manning). Certainly it's likely Gautier's had more than two waiters employed, so that may be why the names don't all match up.

I ran across the name John Howard while tracking this down, but I can't remember in what connection. My copy of Brutus is at work, so I'll check.

Truthfully, I headed for Fred's work right away, Protecting President Lincoln, because I knew that he was a new member of the forum (Hi, Fred). However, we have not received our copy of his new Journal yet, so I was unaware that he had an article on that. Fred is a very thorough researcher, so he's probably going to hit me with his source for John Howard.

P.S. John Howard is the name of one of the gentlemen who now narrates the Surratt's tours over the Booth escape route.
