Don't Shoot That Boy
Don't Shoot That Boy - Abraham Lincoln and Military Justice
by Thomas Lowery We have briefly discussed the author. http://rogerjnorton.com/LincolnDiscussio...omas+Lowry This is an interesting book regarding military justice and many of the cases sent to President Lincoln for his review regarding the final sentence of convicted prisoners. During the Civil War, Lincoln reviewed roughly 1,100 cases and made a hand written note on all of them. This book mentions and summarizes briefly about 500 different cases. The author's indiscretion as mentioned in the above link (not mentioned in the book) and that the specific case is briefly mentioned in the book, as well as Laurie's comments, encouraged me to purchase this book. An interesting book, with desertion, sleeping on guard duty [both punishable by death], and alcohol being three of the predominant violations behind many of the cases referred to the President. This book also gives you a little more insight into Lincoln's character, the pressures he faced, and his concern for the common soldier. I found the book informative and well worth reading. https://www.amazon.com/Shoot-Abraham-Lin...t+that+boy I was able to purchase a used - like new condition - for $3 So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |
