This is a Love Affair...
A Surratt Society member from Wisconsin just sent me a long article on a young lady from Racine who has just been awarded an all-expenses-paid trip to Gettysburg for the 21st Annual Meeting of The Lincoln Forum on November 16-18. "I'm really looking forward to being in a whole room of people just like me." So says this senior from Union Grove High School.
As a youngster, she chose a trip to Gettysburg over Disney World. At 16, she had her choice between a car and a handmade, 1860s period dress. The dress won. Last May, she and her mother attended a three-day re-creation of Lincoln's funeral procession in Springfield. Her bedroom houses two copies of the "Lincoln" movie, over 40 Lincoln books, Lincoln t-shirts, Lincoln socks, a Lincoln action figure, and a Lincoln bobblehead. She is one of only three students from across the country to be awarded this prize and trip. Her name is Michaela Wieties, so if any of our members will be at the Forum in November, please look her up and say hello. |

I believe Angela will be flying in from Germany for the event, and I am sure they will meet. |

RE: This is a Love Affair...
@Laurie and @Roger - thank you both SO MUCH for the heads up! I will make sure to seek her out immediately upon arrival. We might have socks, action figures and a Lincoln trip from 2015 to bond over and I can't wait to do that.
I have also a small group of much younger people who I know will attend the celebration on the 19th and maybe there is yet another chance for a get together outside of the Forum. @Thomas...you wish! Go and do as Lincoln did...get a move on and find a girl by stepping on her toes by yourself. You'll thank me later ;-) In case of emergency, Lincoln and children first. |

Cool.
I have endured a great deal of ridicule without much malice; and have received a great deal of kindness, not quite free from ridicule. I am used to it. (Letter to James H. Hackett, November 2, 1863) |
