Amiable Scoundrel
There is a new biography of Simon Cameron, Lincoln's first Secretary of War called Amiable Scoundrel. It isn't a cheap book, but given that there hasn't been a biography of Cameron written since 1966 when Edwin Stanley Bradley wrote Simon Cameron, Lincoln's Secretary of War: A Political Biography, this is a much-needed update about the man whom Thaddeus Stevens told Lincoln, when asked if he thought Cameron would steal, replied "I don't think he would steal a red hot stove."
Best Rob Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom. --Ida M. Tarbell
I want the respect of intelligent men, but I will choose for myself the intelligent. --Carl Sandburg
