Grant and Sherman: The Friendship That Won the Civil War
Has anybody else read Charles Bracelen Flood's Grant and Sherman: The Friendship That Won the Civil War? I am several chapters into it, and I am enjoying it very much. (I could not find any other discussion of it on the forums.)

I have endured a great deal of ridicule without much malice; and have received a great deal of kindness, not quite free from ridicule. I am used to it. (Letter to James H. Hackett, November 2, 1863)

Miss Bellatrix has (I would think):

Maybe she could give a feedback here?

Thanks for the mention, Eva!! Smile

I'm a few chapters into - I'm enjoying it as well! Sherman is my favourite General (anyone on here who follows me on Twitter can attest to that Wink ). It's kind of been pushed to the side a little as I just started reading the new bio about General Sherman by James Lee McDonough "William Tecumseh Sherman: In the Service of My Country: A Life". It's been quite good so far too.

I find the friendship he and Grant had quite interesting. To me, they were able to read each other and they were a sort of ying-yang. Sherman hated politics being involved with the army but Grant knew how to deal with politicians better than Sherman did I think. They also had an incredible mutual trust for each other.

You'll have to let me know what you think of the book when you're done! I'll post in here too once I finish it.

I finished the book the other day. I enjoyed it very much. Most of my Civil-War Era reading is, frankly, about Lincoln, so I am accustomed to viewing the war, so to speak, from the standpoint of Lincoln and Stanton and Halleck, with Grant and Sherman on the periphery. It was refreshing to see the story told from Grant's and Sherman's standpoint, with Lincoln and Stanton and Halleck on the periphery.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the book! I've been completely Civil War focused lately - mainly Gettysburg, since I'm probably going there in October. I'm trying to learn as much about it as I can.

I still have a Lincoln bio on the go though too.

May I ask which one?

I went there a couple of years ago at the end of July. Enjoyed it very much. If you are interested in getting a battlefield tour guide, look up Larry Korczyk. He was great. His usual tour lasts a couple of hours, but I was the only one on the tour that morning, and, seeing that I was interested in taking a lot of pictures, we were out for four hours.

Maybe because I'm an outdoor and nature person, but in Gettysburg touched me much more than Ford's, and on the cemetery I could "feel" Abraham Lincoln speaking. The lacking flocks and business of fellow tourists on a quiet day in March probably have added to that as I felt the same solemnity at the Soldiers' Home and the Memorial, the latter not being frequented due to a snow storm.
