(06-15-2016 12:14 PM)Eva Elisabeth Wrote: Stanton was eager to get the convicted as far away from the public as possible - for their own safety?! AFAIK that was the reason why Alberny was altered. Wouldn't he have felt the same as for Mary? I have seen other sources that said that Stanton's reasoning for the change was based on making it difficult for the press and writers to have access to the remaining conspirators. The old D.C. Penitentiary on the grounds of the Arsenal had segregated sections for the sexes when it was in use. |

RE: Hanging Mary
I would think in both cases (whichever of these reasons) it would have applied to Mary the most, wouldn't it? Had she not been hanged, how would people have reacted? My impression is to her applies the German proverb the most - no one is as bad as his(her) reputation and as good as his(her) obituary - i.e.whatever her conviction was (would have been) it would have caused opposition, or not?

RE: Hanging Mary
I was a little reluctant to get this book, thinking it might be more of a girlie gothic romance novel.
It's not. I enjoyed the book, and knowing the historical setting helped me enjoy the book more. Written in first person form, Mary Surratt and boarder Nora Fitzpatrick tell the story of their experiences of the last few months of Mary's life, Booth's visits, the trial of the conspirators, and Mary's death. As historical fiction, this book is more historical than fiction. Author and forum member Susan Higginbotham gives us a glimpse into the lives or these two ladies (especially regarding Nora) by adding a more personal touch to this tragic story that we are all somewhat familiar with. Unfortunately, Nora's life does not turn our happily ever after. In her later years Nora is plagued by physical and mental health problems I purchased a large print hardcover copy https://www.amazon.com/Hanging-Thorndike...036&sr=1-8 Interested in learning more about Nora? Try here https://www.susanhigginbotham.com/wp-con...Sorrow.pdf So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |
