Two New Lincoln Books
Has anyone read these new books (available now on Amazon despite having May publication dates)? The first, Alan Manning's Father Lincoln, focuses on Lincoln's relationship with his sons; the second, by Charles Strozier, on Lincoln's friendship with Joshua Speed.

Have not read them yet, but I just ordered the second one - it looks really interesting and I'll report as soon as I am through. Thanks for posting about them!

In case of emergency, Lincoln and children first.

Angela, I'm looking forward to hearing what you think of them! I'd like to read them as well - they do sound quite interesting! As it stands, I've got four Lincoln/Civil War books on the go right now. It might be awhile before I can get around to reading these.

And yes, thanks for posting about them, Susan! I always love to know when there are new Lincoln books out. I feel like my list of books to read grows every few days Wink

Sound both good. I, too, hope for your reviews (the second one is quite pricey)!

RE: Two New Lincoln Books
I just finished the book about Speed, and I recommend it. It's a fascinating look at the relationship between Lincoln and Speed (one that the author regards as strictly heterosexual, for those who were wondering), with interesting insights into Lincoln's depressive episodes and his breakup and reconciliation with Mary Todd.

Thanks Susan, having read Strozier's other book, "Lincoln's Quest For Union", I was curious how he might deal with their close friendship.
Any significant areas that you were NOT in agreement with?

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

Have you read "We are Lincoln Men"? How do they compare? (Despite Donald's containing just one chapter on Speed).

RE: Two New Lincoln Books
I haven't read "We Are Lincoln Men." It's on the list!

Gene, there's nothing that I really strongly disagreed with. I'm still pondering over the question of Lincoln's breakup with Mary and their reconciliation, so it was interesting to read this author's opinion, although I wasn't entirely convinced. I need to read some more of the sources, Herndon, etc. (I'm writing a novel about Mary and her sister Emilie, so I have to figure out something!)

One theory on this I've read is that Abraham was strongly attracted to Matilda Edwards (as most young Springfield males apparently were), and this was the main factor in the breakup. I have always wondered about Lincoln's feelings for Matilda...

(Speed liked her, too, I think)

If you haven't yet I highly recommend (rather urge) you to also read Donald's "Herndon's Lincoln".
