First, I am glad to see Ed honored for his work in the world of Lincoln studies. As just one of a number of people who has benefitted from Ed's kindness and support, I think the honor is long overdue. You are a true inspiration for those of us in the field, Ed.

If I can, however, pick just one nit on the story....I didn't know Lincoln was shot on November 18 (copy editing in newspapers is dead in America).

Thank you Rob for the kind words. As to being shot on November 18, I guess we were all young reporters at one time. It is not a question of incorrect facts as much as it is incorrect English.

Rob and Ed, you are right, the way that sentence was written, it does sound like Lincoln was shot on November 18.

Though still not perfect, clarity may have been improved with a simple move of a prepositional phrase: Berkeley Springs resident and Abraham Lincoln Historian Ed Steers was awarded the 2015 Richard Nelson Current Award of Achievement by the Lincoln Forum on November 18 for his insight into the death of Abraham Lincoln.

Rob, I also think you are right about copy editing being dead. I have a friend that works for a small local newspaper and he said they don’t even have a copy editor on staff. With deadlines, small staffs, and a lack of copy editoris, it’s no wonder grammatical mistakes happen in newspaper articles in this day and age. I'm just glad we still have newspapers!

In thinking about it, I wish I had a copy editor for my posts!

I might also add that in addition to Ed, 2015 Richard Nelson Current Award recipients included William C. “Jack” Davis and Harold Holzer. I was in attendance at the award ceremony and it was quite touching to watch when it dawned on each of the men that they were the award winners. All were very surprised and probably none of them should have been!! All are definitely deserving of the award. My additional congratulations go out to all!
