RE: Old Capitol Prison
Absolutely fantastic!
OK John and Barry -- we need someone to do a virtual tour of the Arsenal! "The Past is a foreign country...they do things differently there" - L. P. Hartley |

Not the Ritz by any means. President Lincoln, fed up with the mischief making of one of his wife's Confederate sympathizing sisters(Martha Todd White) threatened to have her tossed in the prison if she didn't leave D.C. within 24 hours. I guess Mary sided with her husband. She refused to receive Martha at the WH! |

They reported that Mary had helped Martha Todd White smuggle contraband out of Washington and had therefore aided the South. From there, the story was embellished to the point that Mary had told military secrets as well and was a traitor and secret Southern sympathizer. |

The librarian literally dumped them in her lap and suggested they might be of interest. This illustrates a classic case of replevin, a hot button topic for years with dealers, collectors, relatives, state, and federal agencies. It allows the government or individuals to legally recover "goods unlawfully withheld from their possession." The Hartranft records were loaned by the family to Gettysburg College in 1965, and they asked for their return in 1992-93. The college refused, despite previous documents through the years detailing that the material was meant to be on loan as opposed to a donation. Lawyers became involved, the case made it into national media, and at one point the feds thought, hey, wait a minute, and now Gen. Hartranft's records (he was meticulous in keeping material from his career, hoping to write a book) are locked away in a less accessible archive. The family lost their books and Gettysburg College had a public relations nightmare. |

According to Northerners the poor woman was a traitor for being a Southerner, and according to Southerners she was a traitor for supporting her husband and the Union cause. She couldn't win no matter what, and still cannot to this day if certain authors and academics are to be believed. No wonder she eventually lost her mind. |
