A new book about Lincoln's faith
I'm looking forward to reading this book: "Lincoln's Battle with God: A President's Struggle with Faith and What It Meant for America" It will be available in November. I'll add it to my list of Lincoln books to read. I'm still reading "Abraham Lincoln Deals with Foreign Affairs: A Diplomat in Carpet Slippers." An then I want to read the new bio on Robt. T. Lincoln.

RE: A new book about Lincoln's faith
Thanks for the "heads-up" on this book Karen. This is such an interesting subject regarding Lincoln. Depending on who the author is-Lincoln was an either atheist, a Christian, or altogether something else.

RE: A new book about Lincoln's faith
There will be another book coming out soon on Lincoln's foreign policies by Dr. David Perry. I believe the title is American Braggadocio.

RE: A new book about Lincoln's faith
I've ordered it, but I will wait before expressing an opinion. However, given Mr. Mansfield's previous works, and some of the criticisms they have engendered, I'm not expecting much. However, as I said, I will reserve judgment.

RE: A new book about Lincoln's faith
Ed Steers wrote a wonderful article on Lincoln's faith. It's entitled "A Question of Faith: Was Lincoln a Christian?" in the September, 1999, edition of "North and South" magazine (Volume 2, Number 7).

RE: A new book about Lincoln's faith
I have an old copy of The Religion of Abraham Lincoln by William Wolf. Haven't read it in years.
Anyone familiar with it How does it measure up on this subject? Is there one book that sets the standard for this subject? So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

RE: A new book about Lincoln's faith
Gene, I don't have that one, but I do have another old one (1948) entitled "Lincoln and the Preachers" by Edgar DeWitt Jones.
I think Dr. Wayne Temple's "Abraham Lincoln: From Skeptic to Prophet" is the best. |

RE: A new book about Lincoln's faith
I wrote a book a few years back called, "Lincoln's Christianity." It was not a work of religious apologetics by any means.
Wayne Temple's book is probably the best. I tend to agree with a famous quote I used in my own book. When searching for who Jesus of Nazareth was....we tend to find the face at the bottom of the well. Meaning we see often what we want to see. I believe Lincoln did too. |

RE: A new book about Lincoln's faith
I would like to mention another book Mike has written. 100 Essential Lincoln Books is an invaluable guide for finding the best Lincoln books. Mike selects 100 books and includes a 2 or 3 page summary of each one. It's very well done. Kudos, Mike.

RE: A new book about Lincoln's faith
Thanks Roger. You are FAR too kind!
If you can get a hand on it William Barton's 1920 book, "Soul of Abraham Lincoln." is very well argued and makes some good points. Of course Barton and I are "very liberal Christians" in the non-political sense. So me agreeing with him is part of why I like it. |

RE: A new book about Lincoln's faith
Mike,
It was reprinted in 2005 by the University of Illinois Press. http://www.press.uillinois.edu/books/cat...30499.html It's not cheap, but it is readily available. Glad to see you're here. By the way, is anyone else unable to put in hyperlinks or italicize their text, or am I the only one? Rob, use your mouse to highlight the word or words you wanted italicized and press the I at the top of the box (in the line that begins with B).
