An Abraham Lincoln Tribute
Originally published in 1933 as Abraham Lincoln Biography in Woodcuts, a wordless biography of 36 woodcut illustrations by Charles Turzak. This Dover Publishing reprint also includes about 50 pages of Lincoln's letters and speeches. I purchased it because I was intrigued by the illustrations.
http://www.amazon.com/Abraham-Lincoln-Tr...les+yurzak To learn more about Charles Turzak and see some of the woodcuts from this book http://quod.lib.umich.edu/j/jala/2629860...w=fulltext More examples of his work (not in this book - 5 Lincoln woodcuts) http://www.chicagomodern.org/art/view/hi...n_woodcuts So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

RE: An Abraham Lincoln Tribute
Hi Gene:
I also own this book and was drawn to it for the same reason as yourself- the artwork. I have greatly cut down on my book purchases as I have no more room! Bill Nash |

RE: An Abraham Lincoln Tribute
The woodcuts are intriguing - and some quite spooky, have a certain Halloween touch to them! Thanks for sharing, Gene - how do you come across such books?

RE: An Abraham Lincoln Tribute
Eva's right, Gene! How do you discover such stuff?!?!?! And "spooky" is the exact word that comes to mind regarding those woodcuts! Powerful images.
I can remember hacking away at wood- and linoleum-cutting in art class. It looks like it would be simple until you try to do it yourself. --Jim Please visit my blog: http://jimsworldandwelcometoit.com/ |

RE: An Abraham Lincoln Tribute
I was looking at the illustrations in the book again this morning. Are there any others by other artists like them? Very unusual- kind of dark- almost brooding- strange really. But I like them!

RE: An Abraham Lincoln Tribute
I googled "woodcuts Abraham Lincoln" and a few more popped up, mostly woodcuts from newspaper illustrations. No one artist that compares to the number that Turzak did, and none that compare to his artistry (whether you care for it or not).
