I believe Ida Tarbell was born and raised in that area of Pennsylvania. Does it have anything to do with her? Did he work for Ida Tarbell's father?

Another wild guess:
Cale Marshall (alias Jim Phelps) was a secret detective for Lafayette Baker, like Andrew Potter. (Actually it is Andrew Porter, Roy Neff miss-typed his name, and that is why no one can find any record of him - think about it) As such, no physical records exist for Cale or Andrew, not even a form 1099.

Cale later went on to write about his experience through a popular TV show

I will guess that Cale Marshall was in the construction business and died of an accident that occurred on one of his building projects. He wasn't satisfied with some work that had been done and went up on a scaffold to inspect it. Near the other end of the scaffold flooring a load of bricks had just been deposited. As he reached the scaffold and stood on it, the boards gave way, and he fell to the ground. The bricks tumbling down upon him crushed his head, kidneys, and other parts of his body.
