RE: "Stump the Yankee"
OUCH!!! My first beating from the Surrattsville She Rebel!! And she called me a Carpetbagger!! I'd bet you're going to sleep like a baby tonight after leaving those red marks on my Yankee hide. That is indeed the correct answer!

I thought this one was a slam dunk (I usually think that, however). William "Buck" Best was one of the children who was let out of school to meet Lincoln when he traveled to Charleston to meet with his step-mother before heading to Washington to assume the Presidency. Buck lived until 1947 and supposedly never tired of telling the tale of the time he met Lincoln. Congratulations, Miss Laurie!

RE: "Stump the Yankee"
Depending on the President, I would probably tell the tale of meeting one until my dying day. I did get to meet George W. Bush and to shake his hand as part of my activities with the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Board of Advisors. I thought he was very warm and friendly.

I also met Hillary Clinton at a gathering that James Swanson had at his home several years ago. She stayed only a few minutes, but again was warm and friendly.

Part of the perqs of being in the Lincoln field (even if one is more interested in the assassination).

Now, truthfully, there are a few Presidents that I would not walk across the street to meet....! I will just not give you the list.

Of the 11 Confederate states, which state had the most known deserters?

Good morning Betty. Nope. In fact, Georgia was not even in the five. Those Georgia boys didn't play!

RE: "Stump the Yankee"
Virginia and Tennessee are in the top five. Here are the rankings for the states with the highest deserter rates as given in America's Civil War magazine:

1) North Carolina-23,694 known deserters
2) Tennessee-12,155
3) Virginia-12,071
4) Mississippi-11,604
5) Arkansas-10,029

The magazine doesn't rank the remainder of the states.

RE: "Stump the Yankee"
Rebels 9
Yankee 3

Good evening and welcome back to another installment of "Stump the Yankee". I'm fully recovered from that vicious beating I suffered at the hands of that unrepentant She Rebel from Surrattsville. I'm thinking now that the gender specific round may have been a bad idea. I thought the last question was a guaranteed ringer. I'm also hearing rumors of guerrilla warfare tactics involving promises of fried chicken, grits, cornbread and moonshine for help in giving me yet another beating and boosting the Rebel score. Anything goes here, so it's on now, you Rebels. Time for the blamed Yankee tricks edition.....

Lincoln relics. They're all over the place, aren't they? Swatches of towels, hair locks, wallpaper, Lincoln's hat, watch - you name it. Rich Smyth and Jim Garrett are actually working on a book about them. Some have good provenance, some don't. This one doesn't. I dug deep in the Yankee carpetbag for this one. Here it is....

What rumored relic was used in a movie that barely mentioned Lincoln's name?

The SOUND of Lincoln's watch in Spielberg's movie Lincoln was recorded from his own personal pocket watch.....

RE: "Stump the Yankee"
I'm very sorry, RHSR, but this movie wasn't about Lincoln.

Hint # 1 - It's an old movie.

RE: "Stump the Yankee"
Oh, I am out of this contest. I am so bad at remembering old movies...

OK - I lied - I'll take one guess (even though this is not a really old movie): National Treasure: Book of Secrets? I loved that movie because the first word you see on the screen is "Surratt!"

RE: "Stump the Yankee"
It is not National Treasure: Book of Secrets. If that is your only guess, I have the surrender terms already drawn up. I just need you to sign them and admit a Rebel defeat. (Bet that changes her mind!)

Hint # 2 - This is a movie I'm betting everyone over 40 has seen at least once. The main character's (not the actress') home state can be found written in this picture.
