And from the physics point of view Mrs. Keckley was wrong respectively we all should win - white isn't a color, it's the sum of all visible spectral colors (hence all our guesses are included in white...)

If it was white, I can kind of guess why. Mary Lincoln is rumored to have said she liked it when Abraham wore this.
Somehow it didn't become much of a fashion trend until the 1950's
