RE: Dr Mary Walker Wears the Pants
A remarkable lady, however....I was reading some of the comments about the book. One writer stated Ms Walker graduated from a homeopathic medical school, not a regular medical college. Another stated she was not in the army, and had no contract with the 52nd Ohio regiment She was a volunteer camp follower. (It appears it was difficult for women to help during the civil war in other than domestic tasks)
I don't know if any of this is true. To me, this does not diminish her accomplishments, but she was not "mainstream" for her time and was a somewhat controverisal person who may have enjoyed the attention this brought her. Can anyone recommend some additional reading? So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |
