Roscoe wrote, "One day (we are told) a woman spy disguised in widow's weeds, heavily veiled, walked into Lincoln's office and tried to poison him with a kiss. Smallpox. The story may be apocryphal, but the President did, in fact, contract a mild case of varioloid."

Stanton has been the fall guy on that claim for years. I once gave some consideration to Salmon P. Chase, but as badly as he wanted the Presidency, I just could not make a case.

There is a strong case that Taylor was poisoned and a weaker one that poison was tried on Buchanan.

If you count smallpox infestation as poison then yes. Dr. Luke Blackburn tried it with the consent of Jeff Davis. Did Lincoln's son Willie die due to poison or disease. Pick your conspiracy and take your choice.
