RE: Kentucky Derby
It's that time of year. Coverage begins Thursday at 3:30 with raceday at 2:30 on NBC! Be sure to watch all season long. And also, Saturday is Free Comic Book Day, so find a comic shop near you and get a free comic or 2 to read in between races:

RE: Kentucky Derby
One of the longshots this year is a one-eyed horse named Patch (thanks, Betty O):

RE: Kentucky Derby
Epic Race. Poor Larry Collmus mashed Patch and Hence's names together and Thunder Snow thought it was a bull rodeo. Former announcer Tom Durkin is a co owner of Always Dreaming. I met him at the Breeders' Cup last fall and sent Roger the picture of us. Durkin was in a discussion with other announcers on the NBC website. I can't wait to join this elite group of men in a few years as the voice of NBC: https://twitter.com/ThomasE_Kearney/stat...5831092224

Patch finished 14th. Larry Collmus confused the names Patch and Hence and together they made Pence instead of Patch. He mentions Patch and Hence in the interview with Bob Costas

How many horses were in the field yesterday? Was #14 a semi-decent finish for a one-eyed horse? |

RE: Kentucky Derby
There were 20 horses in the field; an extremely large one. Patch was in the number 20 slot. To me, the most unusual/funniest incident was when Thunder Snow broke at the starting bell. He came out of that gate like a bronc out of a rodeo chute; bucking and twisting. He is a horse used to racing in Europe on turf and apparently wanted no part of racing on a sloppy mud track!

RE: Kentucky Derby
Thanks for the info on Thunder Snow - I thought he pulled up lame. Good to know he wasn't hurt.
