These ladies are Vivandières a French name for women attached to military regiments. Ladies served in the Crimean War and also in our Civil War; providing water and aid to soldiers.

RE: Who is this person?
Wow, that was fast Betty. The term Vivandières and their long history serving military regiments is new to me. Betty your prize is a ticket to Donizetti's "La fille du régiment".

For origins & history go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivandi%C3%A8re

Kudos to Dave and Eva - you are both correct. I actually thought this one might last awhile. You both win a free, 21 day trip to Alaska!

That photo was new to me as well. Any idea what year it was taken?

Thanks, Eva.

I wouldn't have recognized him either, Toia, because of the steely look in his eyes. In fact, that photo reminds me of some photos I've seen of Lincoln. Most of the photos that we see of Seward show him with a more genial expression.

The eye reminded me of A. Lincoln's, too!

Linda and Eva, that is what I thought when I first posted the question! I am glad you two saw a resemblance also! Thank you (my aging eyes suddenly feel younger). I really thought the question would last longer than it did.

RE: Who is this person?
If you had only posted the eye that would most likely have worked out...the nose was just too striking (unveiling)!
