Roger, you don't happen to know the name of the cemetery do you? Strangely enough, I drove through Blunt (not much to drive through) this past spring on my way to Pierre, SD to do some research at the state archives. I anticipate going through again sometime in the future and would make a quick stop to see the place.

Rec'd mine in the mail on Thursday, Anita. Did you see my opening comments on it under the Books section? Just after the Prologue and the first chapter, I may have to change my negative opinion of Kate. Right now, I'm noticing similarities between her and Mrs. Lincoln in their early years. Maybe that's the reason for the mutual dislike -- they each saw themselves in the other person.

No Laurie, I didn't catch your comments. My copy arrives tomorrow. You make a good point when you say "Maybe that's the reason for the mutual dislike -- they each saw themselves in the other person." More after I do some reading.

"Maybe that's the reason for the mutual dislike -- they each saw themselves in the other person." would make perfect sense as that's so often the way it is. And one was in the advantage of position while the other was in advantage of "youth".

Brilliant guess, Gene, but it's not William Sprague.

Hint #1: Both Abraham and Mary Lincoln dealt with this gentleman.

Hint #2: His name is well-known!

I very much apologize for erroneously posting a photo of the sought-after gentleman's son due to a misleading caption. This is (guaranteed) the correct likeness. I was delighted to discover one (strangely only on...) "younger image", thus the mistake...anyway, the hints might even be correct for father and son (hint #2 definitely!!!). Sorry again!

This is an outstanding guess, Roger, but, I'm sorry, not correct. It might be the other way round in the USA, but I believe worldwide the name of the gentleman whose customers the Lincolns were is better known than the name Montgomery Ward.

OK. That was a bad guess. I just looked up J.C. Penney and he wasn't even born until 1875. Got caught up in the department store named after a person idea. I will have to try again!
