Can someone explain the significance of featuring a poster on Gen. Harris's book on the steps of Ford's Theatre throughout this entire presentation? Personally, I found it a tad distasteful and undignified.

Laurie, You don't know how bad I wanted to go over and sucker punch that guy. I mean I guess he had the right to be there but still........come on. On that one day you can't give shameless self promotion a rest? To my knowledge he was the only one out there hawking his wares. Tasteless rude and offensive..... and I'm just getting started.
As to why CSPAN featured it I can only figure they weren't aware of the context and thought it made a good visual. That's TV for you. All else aside though, what an event. |

I am surprised that the NPS allowed that to happen. He must have paid for a permit to do so. Let's just say that I hope he had to pay big time! We have to pay the NPS a permit fee (fairly hefty one) twice a year in order to bring our Booth Tour buses on Tenth Street. It never used to be that way...

It was the only crass and tacky touch to an otherwise quite moving ceremony. Shame on him.

Laurie, You are so right. I felt the same way as soon as I saw the poster I thought to myself why would that be there and why were the camera's always on it. I also think that the T.V. people didn't know anything but that it made good T.V.. Whoever condoned that should have been ashamed of themselves. I though that the rest of the ceremony was very good. I would have loved to have be there and felt the emotions of all those involved. Well done.

NPS and Ford's didn't want the Catholic conspiracy guy there. He was talked to by NPS Rangers and D.C. Police but he asserted his right to stand there and was not causing a disturbance so they couldn't do anything. He just stood there with his sign all night chatting with people who came up to him trying to hawk a poorly written and completely unsubstantiated book from the 1890's. The news crews used it since it was a nice picture of Lincoln and they were likely unaware of what the point of the display was.

What an oaf. |

If I'm not mistaken, it's a reprint of a book by Burke McCarty, The Suppressed Truth about the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln; published about 1920 or so....it's garbage - "The Past is a foreign country...they do things differently there" - L. Thanks, Dave - I have Harris' book but was never impressed with it - "The Past is a foreign country...they do things differently there" - L. P. Hartley |

Anyway - thanks for posting this video so those of us that were not there could get a feel for what the tribute was like!
