Sorry gentleman, but Roger nailed it! In 1944, a Liberty ship was christened the SS Ida M. Tarbell. I am in the early stages of researching this, but it appears to have seen some action in the Philippines, although the ship was not a combat ship but rather a cargo ship.

Exactly how Tarbell's name was chosen is unknown, but I hope to find out soon. Most ships were named after famous people of the time or earlier. At its peak, shipyards were turning out three ships a day. I am working with the National Archives to get as much documentation as possible.

The ship was only in service for two years. Evidently, Liberty ships were built so quickly that many suffered from poor quality. In 1947 the Coast Guard sold the Tarbell to a Greek company (over 529 of the ships were sold to Greece after World War II), and was scuttled in 1968.

I did google the last part of the quote which led me to a disagreement that Lincoln seems to have with Tarbell about what should be done when falsely accused.

In his last public address, Lincoln said: "As a general rule, I abstain from reading the reports of attacks upon myself, wishing not to be provoked by that to which I cannot properly offer an answer." (Complete Works of Lincoln, Nicolay and Hay, Editors, New York, [1905], xi, 85.)

Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln, Volume 8, p. 401-402, April 11, 1865:

"As a general rule, I abstain from reading the reports of attacks upon myself, wishing not to be provoked by that to which I can not properly offer an answer. In spite of this precaution, however, it comes to my knowledge that I am much censured for some supposed agency in setting up, and seeking to sustain, the new State Government of Louisiana. In this I have done just so much as, and no more than, the public knows. In the Annual Message of Dec. 1863 and accompanying Proclamation, I presented a plan of re-construction (as the phrase goes) which, I promised, if adopted by any State, should be acceptable to, and sustained by, the Executive government of the nation. I distinctly stated that this was not the only plan which might possibly be acceptable; and I also distinctly protested that the Executive claimed no right to say when, or whether members should be admitted to seats in Congress from such States. This plan was, in advance, submitted to the then Cabinet, and distinctly approved by every member of it. . . ."

That would definitely be ironic, Roger, but it's not John D.

Clue: Both Tarbell and this person were born in Pennsylvania and were in Paris at the same time, although they didn't know each other then.
