RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia
Sorry, but that's not correct.
Clue#1- It was about a subject that Tarbell was not known for, although it would make sense to anyone who knew her. Best Rob Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom. --Ida M. Tarbell

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia
No, it's not cooking.
Clue#2-Tarbell had been rejected by this publication just a few months earlier when she submitted an article about John Wilkes Booth. Best Rob Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom. --Ida M. Tarbell

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia
Tarbell had an article rejected by the New York Times (at least I think it was the Times, maybe it was a wire service publishing through the paper) about Booth and his Pennsylvania oil investments. So, this article would presumably have been published in the Times?
It's midday, and I'm away from my desktop, so I can't check the online archives right now for a specific article. I didn't see Roger's post before I posted mine. |

The New York Times is the correct outlet. Now just need the topic.

Feb 1941 letter to NY Times re. Booth living in Franklin, for an article in April 1941, referencing a photo of Booth given to Ms Black , and discussing Booth interest in the oil industry?

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia
Sorry Mike, but that's not it.
Next clue-Some today might see the article as a conflict of interest for Tarbell. Best Rob Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom. --Ida M. Tarbell

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia
Was it an article on fake news?
(that could explain why The Times rejected it) So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia
Sorry Gene. but given that fake news is a 21st century concept invented by one man, that is not a correct answer.

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia
It turns out my online newspaper only carries public domain issues of the Times, and a 1941-4 article is just too recent. I did do a search of the archive on the Times website and the only article I could find that might match the criteria is an article mentioning Tarbell becoming a judge in a writing contest. But it doesn't seem like Tarbell would be the author of that.
Rob, I'm assuming you're referring to comedian Jon Stewart in your previous post. I've done a search and the term "fake news" to describe either bad news reports or to denigrate news stories one doesn't like has been in relative continuous use since the 19th century.
