My local radio station has a contest I entered. Click the link to check out the sweaters and vote for me. Thomas Kearney, Professional Photobomber. |

RE: Trivia Advent Calendar
That is the Church of St. Georg in Dörna, Netherlands. In 1942, Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, a guest at the White House, supposedly answered a knock at her door and saw Lincoln standing there, wearing a frock coat and stovepipe hat when she opened it. She promptly fainted.
If this isn't the correct answer - I quit! That took me forever to find!! "There are few subjects that ignite more casual, uninformed bigotry and condescension from elites in this nation more than Dixie - Jonah Goldberg" |

RE: Trivia Advent Calendar
I recognize this church. Someday, Kate and I will travel to Germany. We'll snag Eva to be our translator and, together, we'll visit the village that this church is located in. This is the Church of St. George in Dörna, Germany. I can only assume that it's named after the village's most famous resident, conspirator George Atzerodt. George was born and lived in Dörna for less than four years before the family moved back to Seebach (one of the other places I'll drag Eva to). I'm sure there must be a birth and/or baptism record for George here.

RE: Trivia Advent Calendar
Kudos, Dave, that is correct. I'd love to meet you there...I haven't yet gone there because it's far away, not a day trip.
While birth, death and marriage records have consistently been filed west of the river Rhine since the late 18th century due to French occupation this didn't happen in the rest of Germany until such became a law in 1875. There may be a baptism record in the church registers (greatly digitalised and online), but access is pricey. (As for the naming - St. Georg was built in 1119, don't know when it was named after Georg, Saint or not...) Roger 6 Thomas 6 Laurie 3 Dave 4 Joe 2 |

RE: Trivia Advent Calendar
Welcome back to Day 16 of the Trivia Advent Calendar fun! Eva's question the other day with a tree obstructing a building drove me half nuts, so I will continue in that vein until she returns. In turn, I hope this drives you all nuts as well. Good luck.
We currently have a tie for the # 1 spot. With 9 days left, let's see who has what it takes to be this year's Trivia Advent Calendar Champ. What building that had a place in this story is behind these trees? Cook's Hotel in Columbus, Georgia, where Matthew W. Canning accidentally shot John Wilkes Booth in the thigh/rear end (not exactly sure where the bullet entered Booth's body).

Sorry, Roger. It's not Cook's but you're on the right coast.

You're getting warmer, PMOTI. You're also moving north, which is correct.

RE: Trivia Advent Calendar
The City Hotel in Manchester, New Hampshire. Abraham Lincoln and son, Robert, stayed there on March 1, 1860. It was located on the northeast corner of Elm and Lowell.
While in Manchester a machine worker hesitated to shake Lincoln's hand, and Lincoln responded, "Young man, the hand of honest toil is never too grimy for Abraham Lincoln to grasp." (the story may be apocryphal) |

RE: Trivia Advent Calendar
That story may be apocryphal Roger, but unfortunately, so is your answer.
You are however on the right trail with New England. "There are few subjects that ignite more casual, uninformed bigotry and condescension from elites in this nation more than Dixie - Jonah Goldberg" |
