Great article! I have always been sympathetic to Rathbone's state of mind after the assassination. It must have been hard for him to deal with the fact that he possibly could have prevented Lincoln's death even though he was not security. He must have been haunted by the "what ifs"
"What if I had turned my head around and saw Booth before he pulled the trigger?" "What if I had been a little bit more aware of my surroundings?" He must have went over these questions many times in the years following the assassination. |
