Great, but how do you explain the fact that Morgenthau, when talking about the 1843 run for the Whig congressional nomination, uses the phrasing "Illinois legislature"? I'll email you the excerpt right now. I'm starting to doubt my secondary sources...

All I can think of to say is that I believe Professor Morgenthau was confused on state versus federal elections. As far as I know, Lincoln served four terms in the Illinois state legislature, and then he never ran again for that position.

You may be right cause I have to say, I haven't read this elsewhere than in his essay...
