Lincoln's lost gold?

There's a news story that FBI agents, Pennsylvania state officials, and local treasure hunters are searching for buried civil war gold in northern Pennsylvania:

Just looking at a map of the location where they are digging, I find it incredibly hard to believe that Union troops would bury gold there, so far away. At least not for legitimate purposes (ie, not stolen).
