Excellent comments, especially the one about Lincoln pausing between "can" and "not" for emphasis on the "not." I think we also have to take into consideration the changes in spellings, style, etc. over the years. Just in my lifetime - and especially with the coming of the computer (and reporters whose bad spelling and poor grammar have become part of our language) - I have seen these things change. I often have wanted to take a red pen to the Washington Post articles, but then I got disenchanted with more than their language errors and quit them all-together. We won't even discuss how my stomach churns when I hear some of the news anchors and moderators on TV...
