RE: Lincoln funeral train goes thru Coldwater!
Very interesting, Herb. I can tell you that the pilot engine passed through 10 minutes earlier --> at 3:45 A.M. The funeral train had departed Rochester at approximately 3:35 A.M.
Dr. Adonis of the Chicago Tribune wrote, "Since leaving Rochester we have passed through Coldwater, Chili, Churchville, Bergen, and Byron. At all these places were groups of villagers and country people who had come to honor the dead. The stations were becomingly draped with drooping flags and other mournful decorations." The above information is from Scott Trostel's excellent book on the funeral train. |
