RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia
Excellent, Eva! It was James Monroe. After Monroe's term he returned to his home in Virginia (Oak Hill), but after his wife's death in 1830, he moved to New York City to live in the home of his daughter, Maria, and his son-in-law, Samuel L. Gouverneur. It was there that Monroe died of heart failure on July 4, 1831. The home passed through many hands over the years and eventually fell into a dilapidated state. A series of fires made things worse. Finally, in 1927, it was demolished.
