May I ask - I can't remember I've ever seen a photo of Mrs. Sprigg's boarding house - when was it taken? Good Morning! The picture of Mrs. Sprigg’s boarding house was taken a few years after the Civil War. When I was in Washington last month I found a book in a used book store. It is titled “A. Lincoln: The Crucible of Congress” by Paul Findley. Published in 1979, this is a very interesting book about Lincoln the Congressman. It has many pictures in it that I have never seen before. Included is one of Mrs. Spriggg’s boarding house, taken from the same spot as the one I used. But it is a different picture. In this book the credit for the picture reads “Architect of the Capitol”. The one I used has a sign on the front of one of the row houses that reads ARCHITECT. The picture in the book has no sign (there are other differences). This makes me wonder how many pictures are hidden away in various offices. I never thought of the Architect of the Capitol for reference material. Thank you for your praise of my map! The next one is Lincoln’s Washington. |
